Thunberg barberry (Berberis thunbergii). A deciduous perennial shrub up to 1 m tall with unusual burgundy coloring of leaves, beautiful reddish-yellow flowers and bunches of scarlet berries. In summer the coloring is bright green above and bluish underneath, in autumn it is orange and red. Leaves fall in October.

Barberry is an excellent material for miniature trees. The crown is beautifully shaped, dense, dense, branchy with dangling shoots. It tolerates heavy pruning well and gives numerous shoots from old wood.

For spring planting soak the seeds in water for 2-3 days, mix with sand and store for three to four months in the refrigerator at +2-5 ºC. Seeds have a small percentage of germination - only 15 to 40% germinate.
To improve germination, the surface of the seeds is scarified, that is, the surface is slightly damaged. Barberry can begin to germinate in one to two months, so check the seeds every two weeks and if there are sprouts, immediately sow in separate pots.
The acidity of the soil for seedlings in the range 5.8 - 6.5. Composition: turf, sand and peat in a 1:1:1 ratio. Seeds are laid to a depth of 3 cm. Water the soil abundantly, cover with plastic or glass and put on a bright window sill. Shoots will begin to appear in 2-3 months. When two true leaves appear, sprouts pick, and the root should be pruned.
