Barberry bonsai, Ref. 2427
Description:
Japanese barberry (Berberis thunbergii) „Ruby Star”
Age 2 years. Height 21 cm.
Features:
A spectacular plant when grown as a bonsai. The color of barberry leaves is carmine-red with a yellow border, becoming dark red by fall. It blooms in May with small yellow flowers, after which red berries are formed.
Temperature:
Tunberg's barberry is cold tolerant and grows best at temperatures above 10 °C
In summer, temperatures above +35 °C make the plant more susceptible to sunburn, so it is best to move it to the shade.
Location:
Full sun or partial shade. In full sun you can get a more intense color of purple leaves, in those growing in semi-shade, the leaves have a green color.
Soil:
Barberries are completely undemanding of soils (6.0-6.5 pH). The optimal soil mixture consists of garden soil, sand and humus in an equal ratio with the addition of perlite and sphagnum moss. Drainage should be placed at the bottom of the container.
Watering:
A drought tolerant plant, so watering is necessary only after the top layer of soil has dried out
Fertilization:
Barberry should be fertilized in late winter or early spring. It is useful to carry out additional fertilization in early autumn.
Repotting:
The ideal time to repot is from late spring to mid-summer, as warmer weather will favor the growth of the plant.
Shaping and pruning:
Pruning removes weak and poorly developed shoots. In shaping pruning, 1/3 to 2/3 of the shoot length is removed.
Winterization:
In a dark, cool room (cellar, cold pantry) at temperatures from 0 to +12 °C. Tolerates frosts up to - 5 °C.
