Chinese elm (Ulmus parvifolia)
The Chinese elm is ideal for home bonsai cultivation - its unique dense branching, unusual curving, miniature leaves and beautiful decoration have been very popular for bonsai beginners.
Elms, with few exception, almost always shed their leaves before winters.
The resting period continues until February, after which the active growth of new shoots begins.
The most important conditions are stable bright light, proper watering and fresh air.

Repotting is done in early spring, once every 2-3 years, young plants - every year. May be used as mineral components (see more here) and organic (leafy soil, overmixed compost, sand or fine gravel in a ratio of 5: 3: 2).

Winterization of elm trees is carried out in rooms with temperatures of +5 - +6°C. At temperatures above +10°C the tree can quickly come out of rest and begin to grow shoots. If the temperature is lowered again, irreversible processes may occur - delay in development, missing new shoots and leaves formation.

In warm weather, the elm should be taken outdoors to sunny and well-lighted places. If there is a lack of light, the tree will develop too long sprouts, which must be removed. For this reason, the elm needs additional light during the shoot formation period.
The Chinese elm bonsai needs regular watering when the soil in the pot dries out. Do not allow the soil to dry out completely.
During the growth period, fertilizing is done regularly (see more here). During the winter and for 1 month after repotting - without fertilizing.
