Chinese elm bonsai

Age: 5 years
Height: 16 cm

Chinese elm (Ulmus parvifolia) is a popular bonsai species for beginners, as it is a strong tree that responds well to pruning and can be kept outdoors as well as indoors. The most attractive features are its shallow branching, small gnarled leaves, and beautiful bark.

The elm does not tolerate prolonged drought or constant moisture.
Depending on winter temperatures, Chinese elms either shed their leaves or retain them until spring when new shoots appear. Overwinter in cool, frost-free areas.
Can be in sun or semi-shade in summer.
Water when necessary, when the top layer of soil dries out, and then abundantly water the entire root mass.

Chinese elm is ideal for shaping with standard wire methods. Chinese elm grows rather quickly and requires frequent pruning. Before pruning the shoot to 1-2 leaves, you need to let it develop to 3-4 nodes. The best time to prune large branches is in late fall.
When young, Chinese elm trees should be transplanted every two years. As they mature and increase in size, they can be transplanted at longer intervals. Regardless of age, the best time to transplant is spring.
