Description:

Pinus – strobus ‘Green Twist’ (Eastern White Pine)
Features:
An unusual pine, with dense, twisted blue-green needles. The needles of the eastern white pine are softer than most other pine species. Grows relatively fast - up to 5 cm per year.
Placement:
Like most pines, the eastern white pine bonsai should be outdoors all year round. In winter (about 3 months) the tree should be kept cool or cold, but should be protected from hard frosts, strong wind and sun (but not from snow and rain).  If necessary, it can be placed in an unheated garage or shed. In early spring, when the chance of frost is gone, the tree can be put back in its usual place. For the rest of the year, the tree should be placed outside in full sun (morning sun or semi-shade is best).
Soil:
The soil should be well-drained, fertile and light. For example: turf soil, top peat, humus and sand. It is recommended to add perlite. As drainage you can use expanded clay, vermiculite, broken red bricks, etc. Ph 5.5-6.
Watering:
The soil should not be allowed to dry out completely.  If the soil seems dry, water the tree thoroughly until water begins to run off the bottom.  This can be daily during the growing season.
Fertilizer:
Since the pine tree is in a small pot, it needs nutrients.  A slow-release fertilizer (granule-based) is ideal for this purpose and can be added every 1-2 months during the growing season.
Repotting:
Repotting should be done periodically when the root system has completely filled the pot.  If the roots are coming out of the bottom of the pot, it is time to repot the bonsai.
Young trees (up to 10 years old) need to do this every 2-3 years, and older trees - every 3-5 years. Repotting can be done in spring, before the candles open, or in late summer - early fall, after the summer heat subsides. These are the two periods of greatest root growth in pines.
The root system should be pruned gradually, during transplanting, to always leave the main roots.
Shaping and pruning:
New growth is pruned to the last good bud. Regular pruning will help keep the eastern white pine short while helping the trunk grow thicker.
Wire forming should be done in late fall, and the wire should be left on the tree for no more than 6-8 months. In the spring, pinch the new shoots back to 1/3 of their length.
Every 1-2 years, in late spring, all new shoots can be removed if the tree is healthy and well fertilized. This leads to the fact that in the fall, buds will appear on the places of the removed shoots. This formation stimulates the growth of short internodes on the branches.

Age 4 years. Height 30 cm.
