Liquidambar bonsai, Ref. 2481
Description:
Liquidambar styraciflua 'Gumbal'
Age: 5 years, height: 38 cm.
Features:
Deciduous tree, with leaves similar to maple. It is native to Central and North America, China and Turkey.
Amber trees are highly valued forest trees, so are very popular in bonsai creation.
Temperature tolerance:
Resistant to heat and drought, but require protection from frost.
Location:
Full sun for at least six hours a day
Maintained outdoors all year round, provided frost protection.
Soil:
Moist, well-drained. Specialised mixtures are well suited
Watering:
Prefers slightly acidified water pH 6 to 6.5.
Liquidambar should be watered thoroughly as soon as the soil begins to dry out
Fertiliser:
Use a solid organic fertiliser once a month or a balanced liquid fertiliser once a week during the growing season.
Repotting:
Amber trees should be replanted every two to three years in early spring when they are still dormant, with regular or heavy root pruning. The roots tend to grow strongly. Older and larger specimens can be transplanted at longer intervals. Use a well-drained standard soil mix with a neutral to slightly acidic pH value.
Shaping and pruning:
Larger, thicker branches are best pruned in spring after new shoots emerge. Pruning during the dormant period can lead to drying of the branches and poor wound healing. The cuts should be sealed with sealant. Shoots should be allowed to grow 10-15 cm, and then cut them back to one or two leaves. The top tends to grow particularly strong, so the top shoots should be cut back to allow the weaker lower branches to grow. The branches and new shoots are tied with wire in June and July. Take into account that old wood is stiff and difficult to twist.
