Description:

Nordmann (Caucasian) fir„Searling”, Abies nordmanniana

Growing a Nordmann spruce bonsai is a very interesting process and the result is a unique miniature tree with short, dark green needles. In Eastern countries, the spruce symbolizes immortality, rebirth and the pursuit of perfection.

Features.
The tree has a characteristic pleasant pine aroma. The needles never fall off completely, but their complete renewal gradually occurs every five years. Propagation of spruce is possible with the help of seeds hidden inside small cones. The cones contain up to twenty seeds, but they do not open even after full maturity. Once dropped on the ground, the seeds do not germinate until several years later.

Temperature:
Spruce prefers cool growing conditions with temperatures between +18 and 22ºC.
During the rest period from +5 to 10ºC. If the tree is grown outdoors, during the winter period bonsai should be protected from strong frosts and winds. It is recommended to move the plants to a protected place and provide additional insulation.
The tree responds well to ventilation and fresh air.

Lighting:
Spruce prefers bright, diffused lighting. Direct sunlight dries out the tree, so sun exposure should be limited. We recommend placing the tree on the west or east side. In winter, when choosing a location, take into account that the plant does not like dry air and should not be placed near heaters.

Watering:
Spruce is moisture-demanding, so water twice or three times a week as the topsoil dries out. The necessary moisture level is maintained by spraying. In the fall, before the tree goes into dormancy, watering is significantly reduced and spraying is not carried out.

Soil
The soil should be well-drained, fertile and light. For example: sod, peat, humus and sand. It is recommended to add perlite. As drainage you can use expanded clay, vermiculite, broken red bricks, etc.
pH 5.5-6

Fertilizers:
Coniferous tree should be fed in the spring during active growth. Fertilizer is applied every four weeks, for a total of three fertilizations per year. In summer, fall and winter, additional nutrition is not used.

Repotting:
Tree repottings are done in early spring. Young trees (up to 3-4 years old) every year, and bonsai trees 5-9 years old every 2-3 years, trees over 10 years old are transplanted every 5-6 years. Repotting includes root pruning and soil renewal.

Shaping:
There are a few basic rules when pruning spruce trees. A significant correction of the crown is made at the end of February, in May young shoots are pinched, and in late summer the stiff shoots are cut off. The cuts are treated with a special putty.

Possible illnesses:
Although spruce trees have good immunity, pests can cause serious damage to the tree.
Spider mites are the most common danger. The branches of the tree are covered with a light spider web, and upon close inspection, small mites can be seen. Such a pest leads to a rapid yellowing of the needles, the plant loses its decorativeness and begins to wither. The problem is solved by spraying insecticides. Often spider mite appears in conditions of dry air.
Fungal defeat is manifested as a rusty shade of needles, which begins to fall off rapidly. And on its surface, small bubbles appear, spreading the disease. Treatment is carried out with a fungicide solution, and the affected areas are removed, as well as fallen needles from the soil surface.

Age 4 years. Height 30 cm.
