Smoketree bonsai, Ref. 2858
Description:
European smoketree (Cotinus coggygria)
Age 4 years. Height 38 cm.
Features:
An ornamental plant favored for its brightly colored leaves and fluffy inflorescences that resemble clouds of smoke
Location:
Scumpia prefers sunny locations (needs at least 6 hours of direct, sunlight per day). When grown in the shade, the plant will not be bright and abundant in bloom.
Soil:
The plant is not demanding of soil quality, it can grow in poor and alkaline soil, but prefers slightly acidic or neutral soil. A thick layer of drainage is needed in the container, as stagnant moisture or overflow leads to root rot and death of the plant.
Watering:
Young plants need regular watering for good root development. Mature plants are drought tolerant and require minimal watering.
Fertilization:
Feed with a bonsai fertilizer. They are applied once a month from March through September. During the fall and winter months, nutrition is discontinued. Both liquid and granular fertilizers can be used.
Transplanting:
The best time to plant scumpia is in the spring or fall.
Shaping and pruning:
Pruning is necessary to shape the crown and remove old or damaged branches. Pruning is done in early spring before active growth begins.
Winterization:
During the dormant period (October to late March) as with most bonsai, the recommended temperature is 0 to + 14ºC.
