The origins of the Latvian War Museum are connected with the events of the First World War in the territory of Latvia, with the formation in 1915 of a national military unit - the Latvian rifle battalion in the tsarist Russian army.
In September 1916, the museum began its work as a rifle museum.
During the existence of the independent Latvian state until 1940, the museum was under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of War. Since 1919, the museum has been housed in the old Riga Powder Fortress Tower.
The main goal of the museum is to reflect in the museum's expositions the struggle of the Latvian people for freedom and independence, to raise national self-confidence, to instill love for the Fatherland.
Popular expositions: the proclamation of an independent Latvian state, the liberation struggle, the creation of the state. The museum has a rich collection of weapons, photographs, documents, orders and uniforms.
