Lanterns, Ref. 8628
Description:
Lanterns are one of the most recognizable features of Japanese Zen gardens. They serve practical, aesthetic, and symbolic functions.
History of origin
Stone lanterns became widespread in Japan and China in the 6th–7th centuries and were originally used as ritual objects in temples.
In the 16th century, with the development of the tea ceremony, lanterns began to be actively used in gardens and around tea houses. At that time, they acquired a more decorative and symbolic meaning.
The role of the lantern
Lighting
Although many lanterns today are decorative, they originally served as sources of light (with a candle or oil lamp inside).
Path of Contemplation
Lanterns were often placed along garden paths or near bridges to mark the way and help visitors “move in the dark” — both literally and metaphorically.
Symbolism
The light of a lantern is a symbol of enlightenment in the darkness of ignorance.
Stone is a symbol of eternity, stability, and connection to the earth.
Their arrangement emphasizes the balance of light and darkness, emptiness and fullness.
Philosophical meaning
The lantern reminds us that light is always nearby, but we can only see it by stopping and looking closely. The darkness of the garden is a world of illusions, and the soft light is a glimpse of truth.
The lantern is a miniature model of the Universe
Its shape combines the "five elements"
Base (earth), stone (heavy, earthly, eternal)
Column (water).
Chamber for a candle (fire).
Roof (air).
Top (space/spirit).
Indoor lanterns glow softly from artificial LED modules, creating an atmosphere of comfort and tranquility during tea ceremonies, contemplation of tabletop Zen gardens, or relaxation with family and friends.
The lantern is made using a 3D printer.
