Description:

Peat (lowland) is used very limitedly in bonsai cultivation. It cannot be the main substrate, but only a component of the soil mixture or used at certain growing stages.
Highland peat is not used due to its high acidity (pH 3-4) and fibrousness.
It is useful when planting seedlings, rooting cuttings, and young trees, as it accelerates growth, retains moisture and nutrients, and helps to build root mass. At the same time, it is essential to mix peat with mineral components:
- akadama;
- pumice;
- lava crumbs.
It can be used in small doses (5-10% of the total pot volume) when growing moisture-loving plants and trees - maple, beech, hornbeam, rhododendron, azalea.
pH from 4 to 6.5
It is important to control watering and use high-quality fast drainage.
The main disadvantages of peat:
it compacts over time, removing air from the soil
when dry, it becomes hydrophobic (does not absorb water)
it can cause thin roots to rot
it is difficult to control watering
Not suitable for:
- old trees;
- trees in flat pots;
- conditions with high humidity;
- pines, junipers, spruces.
Before use, peat must be sifted to remove dust and small particles.
