Description:

Soil for Chinese elm bonsai

Necessary to have well-drained and aerated soil so that excess water drains quickly and the roots receive oxygen. Soil that is too dense or retains water can cause root rot.
At the same time, the soil must retain enough moisture and nutrients for growth.
pH (around 6–7).
Particle size is also important: bonsai soil should be grainy, stony/porous, not fine garden soil or dense potting soil. This provides drainage, prevents compaction, and allows the roots to breathe.

A good mixture option:
- 50% akadama (to retain moisture and promote fine root development);
- 25% pumice (for drainage and aeration);
- 25% lava (for structure, drainage, and aeration).

To increase the moisture retention capacity of the soil (especially in dry climates) and the amount of nutrients, you can add (no more than 10%) compost, peat, and biogumus.
Watering should be carefully monitored to prevent the soil from becoming waterlogged.
