Soil for Chinese privet bonsai

The best soil for Ligustrum sinensis (Chinese privet) bonsai is a well-drained, airy, and moisture-retaining mixture. Although privet is a hardy plant, it cannot tolerate waterlogged, marshy soil. A balanced, structured substrate is ideal.
Neutral or slightly acidic pH (6–7)

The best professional soil mixture
- 50% akadama (retains moisture and nutrients);
- 25% pumice (improves aeration and root branching);
- 25% lava (improves drainage and prevents compaction).

Avoid:
- heavy and dense organic potting soil;

- regular garden soil;
- pure peat;
- dense soil mixtures.
