Cypress bonsai soil

Cypress bonsai require a moisture-retentive, well-aerated mineral substrate.

Optimal ingredients:
- 40% akadama;
- 30% pumice;
- 20% lava;
- 10% fine pine bark.

Akadama retains moisture and nutrients
Pumice supplies air to the roots and provides drainage.
Lava gives the substrate stability and is indispensable for drainage.
Bark serves as a small organic component.

For a small pot, use fraction sizes of 1–3 mm; for a large tree 4–7 mm. Material that is too fine turns  into ordinary soil: there is little air between the particles.

Material that is too coarse allows water to pass through too quickly and does not retain moisture well.

For most cypress trees, slightly acidic or neutral soil with a pH of 5.5–7 is suitable.
