Pomegranate bonsai soil, Ref. 2947
Description:
Soil for Pomegranate bonsai
Optimal composition:
- 40–60% coarse mineral fraction provides drainage and aeration for the roots;
- 20–40% moisture-retaining component retains water and nutrients;
- 10–30% organic matter, especially for young plants.
For mature pomegranate bonsai:
- 40% Akadama
- 30% pumice
- 20% lava rock
- 10% fine pine bark.
Akadama. Retains water and nutrients well while maintaining aeration. It is ideal for pomegranate trees.
Pumice. Improves drainage, provides air to the roots, and is virtually indestructible. Particle size: 2–5 mm.
Lava. Creates a porous structure and ensures good drainage.
Bark. Especially beneficial for young plants.
Coconut coir. Retains moisture well, but can over-moisten the soil if used in excess.
Peat. Should be used only in small quantities, as it compacts over time, does not rehydrate well after drying out, and thus hinders airflow to the roots.
Particle size is very important:
- young plants: 2–4 mm;
- mature plants: 4–7 mm.
The smaller the container, the finer the particle size should be.
Soil pH: 6–7.
