Soil for Citrus bonsai

Citrus bonsai require a growing soil that is well-drained and well-aerated.
The most suitable soil is:
- 40% akadama, which retains moisture and nutrients;
- 30% pumice, which provides aeration;
- 20% lava rock, which improves drainage and structure;
- 10% organic matter (black soil).

For plants growing in small pots, increase the akadama content to 60% to prevent the soil from drying out too fast.

To create a more acidic environment, you can add 10–20% kanuma:
- 30% akadama;
- 30% pumice;
- 20% lava;
- 10% kanuma;
- 10% organic matter.

Substrate particle size:
- for a small bonsai, about 2–5 mm;
- for a larger tree, 4–8 mm.
