Redbud seeds, Ref. 5706
Description:
Seeds (4 pieces per pack).
Redbud (Cercis siliquastrum) bonsai seeds. A flowering deciduous tree as well as a tall shrub reaching 15 metres in height. The branches are branched with various fancy curves - this gives the tree an unusual marquee shape and makes it ideal for bonsai cultivation. In spring, the branches open with clusters of dark pink tiny flowers. The flowering lasts for about a month before the leaves emerge and when the leaves droop in autumn they smell of gingerbread, hence the nickname 'gingerbread tree'. Gingerbread can also be grown indoors.
The seeds must be stratified: soak for one day in warm water at a temperature of about +38-40 °C (you can use a thermos), then remove the swollen seeds, dry slightly on a paper towel or newspaper, place in an airtight bag and refrigerate for a month. This procedure must be repeated three times. In spring, when the air temperature reaches at least +15 ºC, sow the seeds in the ground or in pots. The depth of embedding shall be 0,5-1 cm.
On average, the seeds germinate after 2 to 3 weeks. A temperature of +21-25ºC must be maintained. The germination percentage is low, up to 25 %.
Seeds can also be planted in autumn. For this you will need a shallow container. Put expanded clay in the bottom. For the soil, a mixture of light substrate and perlite. The seeds are easily spread on the soil surface and levelled. The container should be placed in a dark and cool place until spring. The soil should be slightly moist.
In spring, place the seedlings on a southern or eastern windowsill, moisten regularly and cover with plastic film or glass until they grow. When the seedlings have grown, transplant them into individual pots.
Young seedlings are very sensitive to dry conditions. A few hours in a dry substrate can kill seedlings.
