Bonsai mulch, Ref. 2936
Description:
Soil for bonsai mulching
200 ml package
The bonsai mulch we offer contains the best materials: akadama, kiryuzuna, kanuma, pumice, lava, sphagnum moss (packaged separately).
Bonsai mulch is the top protective layer of the substrate, which has not only a decorative but also an important functional role. Mulch for bonsai is selected with particular care because the tree has a shallow root system and a limited pot volume.
Mulching bonsai is not always necessary, but in most cases it is useful:
- it retains moisture in the pot;
- it protects the roots from overheating and sudden temperature changes;
- it prevents the substrate from compacting;
- it fixes the surface during watering (water does not wash away the substrate);
- it improves the appearance (accurate and natural).
Basic requirements for bonsai mulch:
- good air and water permeability;
- chemically neutral pH index of 6.5-7;
- absence of harmful bacteria or pests;
- small fraction (1-5 mm);
- no rapid decomposition or degradation.
The thickness of the mineral mulch layer is usually 3-5 mm.
Do not completely cover the base of the trunk (root collar).
Akadama - granulated Japanese clay:
- excellent moisture retention;
- supports aeration;
- fraction for mulch: 1-3 mm;
- suitable for all types of bonsai;
- duration of use: 1–2 years;
- pH 5.5–6.7
Kiryuzuna is a mineral substrate of volcanic origin:
- excellent aeration;
- retains almost no moisture;
- contains a large amount of beneficial microelements;
- fraction for mulch: 1–5 mm;
- does not decompose over time;
- pH 6.5–6.8
Kanuma is a volcanic substrate (fired clay):
- light, porous;
- fraction: 1–3 mm;
- retains moisture well;
- darkens when watered, allowing visual control of moisture levels;
- pH: 4.5–6
Pumice - volcanic rock with a porous structure:
- stable, does not decompose over time;
- improves gas exchange;
- retains moisture well, helping to reduce the need for watering;
- fraction: 2–4 mm;
- pH: 6.5–8
Lava is a unique mineral of volcanic origin:
- highly porous;
- promotes excellent moisture and air exchange in the soil;
- is a source of macro- and microelements;
- prevents mold growth and acidification;
- excellent material for bonsai design;
- pH: 6.5–6.8
Sphagnum moss - an organic component for mulch:
- retains moisture well, so it is used to reduce the frequency of watering (when leaving for several days);
- requires careful use due to the risk of over-watering and acidification
(use a thin layer of 1–3 mm);
- pH: 3-3.5
What is not suitable for bonsai mulching:
- peat;
- compost;
- humus;
- bark (even fine);
- sawdust;
- gravel larger than 5 mm.
Reason: acidification, poor aeration, root rot.
