Description:

In the Latvian War Museum, in one of the halls of the Powder Tower, there is an exposition “Latvia and Latvian soldiers of the 17th-18th centuries”. The exposition tells about the history of Latvia in the 17-18 centuries.
During this time, the countries bordering the Baltic Sea continued to struggle for dominance in the Baltic Sea. The lands inhabited by Latvians - Vidzeme, Kurzeme, Zemgale and Latgale - were also called Livonia (Livland, Lieffland). 17th century.
At the beginning of the 19th century in Livonia, as well as in the Piltene region, there existed the Principality of Kurzeme and Zemgale and the Principality of Pardaugava (Polish Inflantia), which were dependent on the Polish-Lithuanian state. On the territory of Latvia, almost continuous hostilities took place, the most destructive there were the Polish-Lithuanian and Swedish wars (1600-1629) and the Great Northern War (1700-1721).
According to the laws and orders of the authorities, all segments of the population of Latvia had to bear military duties and participate in wars. Historical sources speak of the Latvians, who made up the largest peasant order in Livonia: "There is no peasant who is not a good shooter."
